Happy seventh anniversary to me! September was 7 years at the Blood Bank of Delmarva. It gives me time to reflect a bit on my journey of the 7 years. Seven is widely regarded as an important number. Personally, I don’t put too much “power” in numbers, however, there are good examples to pause here and reflect at year 7. Seven is widely regarded as symbol of luck, happiness, and spiritual completeness across many cultures. Many flowers have 7 petals representing beauty and symmetry. In the Bible 7 is a day of rest and in the 7th year (and 7x7=49 year of jubilee) debts were forgiven. Seven can represent fulfillment of promises and oaths, exoneration and healing, completion and perfection.
My journey at BBD has been joyous, exciting, challenging, stretching, fulfilling, happy, and worth all of my energy I’ve poured into it. Growing the volunteer involvement over 350%, into all departments of the organization. Expanding community education and outreach recruiting volunteers to help me staff more events than I could have myself. Adding new roles to assist staff, helping BBD give excellent service to donors, recruit new donors, and in the end help save more lives!
I honor and thank the volunteers and staff who have been part of this journey. No journey should solo and this one certainly is not!
It’s rewarding to look at where volunteer engagement has grown at BBD. Is it ever over, this growth, learning and expansion? I hope not, because then I am stagnant and not growing.
The takeaway for myself and maybe you too is: Keep growing, keep learning, keep striving to make a difference, keep making things better in the world. You are important, you bring value, you are valuable, and the world needs all that you bring to make it better!
What are lessons you’ve learned from the past? Email and let me know!
