Burnout!?!

Burnout. Are you or the volunteers who you lead there? I’ve been there. It didn’t happen all at once. It’s a gradual slow process for most people, like a volcano, the pressure builds and builds over time, then one day, BAM! You stop. You just can’t be energetic, creative, giving of time and personal energy. You are weary. Weary in body, soul and spirit. Nothing left to give out anymore.
How have I been working through this? It’s a journey and I don’t have it perfectly handled, however, I now know what to do and the quiet warning signs before I hit the BAM moment. When I’m losing interest in things I used to love, getting less patient with things that didn't bother me before, shutting down, giving up, not pressing forward.
Reach out when you feel it coming! Look for counseling, friends, and family who will support you. Share your feelings, I know you are not alone! I’m happy to connect if you want to chat!
What are you doing that is draining your energy? Is there a way to avoid or change it?
Look within, has your passion changed? Do you need a rest? Do you need a pivot? It will be different for each of us.
Look for what gives you joy, what energizes you, what will fill your inner self again? Music, art, walks in the park, exercise, books, being with people or being alone, time with friends, gaming? Whatever truly gives you energy back and not numb the emptiness. There is a difference!
What volunteer leaders and volunteers do in the hospice space is incredible. Rewarding and draining at the same time.
Be sure to check for a few things: am I hydrated, fed with healthy nourishing foods (I’ve discovered meal prep for healthy premade options), getting enough good sleep (so many resources on how to get good sleep), avoiding too much screen time, avoiding the energy draining things in life.
You may need to adjust your schedule and make some small or major changes! When can you take a walk (and listen to a podcast, music, or just enjoy nature if outside)? What needs to change to get you eating in a healthy way?
YOU have the POWER of choice. Granted, I fail sometimes, but keep going and keep working on your healthy choices. You are worth it, the people around you are worth it and what you do is worth it!
Be well, choose to be well. Your future self will thank you!
What is one change you will make after reading this article?
